At Blackbird Santa Fe, I’m delighted to share a close-up of a stunning Colcha Embroidery piece—rooted in the Spanish Colonial arts of Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. While this particular piece will not be available for sale until July next year, I couldn’t wait to share its beauty and the story behind the craft with you.
What is Colcha Embroidery?
The term colcha comes from the Spanish word for a bedcovering or quilt, but historically it evolved into describing a distinctive embroidered textile—especially in New Mexico’s colonial era.
A few hallmarks of Colcha Embroidery:
The signature colcha stitch—a long, flowing laid thread secured with small “tacking” stitches—creates graceful curves and movement.
Traditionally made with hand-spun wool yarn (often from Churro sheep) on sabanilla, a hand-woven wool cloth.
Natural dyes such as cochineal, indigo, and chamisa gave the yarn its rich, earthy tones.
Designs often feature flowers, vines, birds, and religious imagery—expressions of faith, daily life, and the surrounding landscape.

My Journey with Colcha Embroidery
I began embroidery in Kindergarten, drawn to the rhythm of the needle and the quiet joy of creating with thread. What started as simple stitches grew into a lifelong appreciation for the textures and stories woven into fabric.
Today, I am deeply fortunate to be under the mentorship of Julia Gomez, one of the leading contemporary masters of Colcha Embroidery. Julia’s guidance has helped me connect the technical skill of the art form with its deeper cultural and spiritual meaning. Her mentorship is both an honor and an inspiration, and I am grateful to learn from her knowledge and her heart.
About This Particular Piece
While this piece will officially be for sale in July 2026, it already feels like a conversation between past and present.
The design flows with floral motifs that echo vintage colchas, yet carries a contemporary rhythm and palette.
Each stitch is intentional—rooted in heritage, guided by mentorship, and inspired by my own creative journey.

Congratulations to Estella and all of the 2023 Graduates! 👩🏻🎓
I know I say that every shoot is my favorite, but this really was my favorite! I remember Estella when she was little. Her Mom is a dear friend to me and also a valued client. We wanted to get the beautiful aspen trees for our session background. Santa Fe’s aspens are lovely in any season, but fall is simply the best! When we went to the location, it felt like we had all of nature to ourselves. It was a lot of fun!
Vicky's Boudoir Session
I had such an amazing time photographing Vicky. We met many years ago, almost a decade. So when she told me she was interested in a boudoir session, I couldn’t of been more excited. She is beautiful, strong, independent, an amazing mom, and just an overall great person. I wanted to show all of this in her boudoir portrait.
Most of my boudoir session are private, you will not see the bulk of these sessions online or social media. I had asked her if she would allow me to share these on my website, blog and social media, and she said YES! Even though this was her first boudoir session ever, and she was nervous, she said YES! So here we are! The session was a hit, photos look amazing!

Matthew and Camilla got married in beautiful Nambe, New Mexico. The ceremony was at the Sacred Heart Church and reception at Camilla's family land. It used to be used as a dairy farm. The ambiance was amazing! Every deal of their wedding spoke beauty.

If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
I was fortunate to be able to photograph this beautiful couple. They recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Their daughters presented them with a special anniversary present, dinner reservation at a nice restaurant and a photo session.
Our session was so amazing. Cres and Gail’s daughters were there to hang out. Cres gifted Gail a replica of her original wedding bouquet and a beautiful charm bracelet. Not a single eye was dry.
I love being part of these special moments, days and preserving them in time.
